Curtain Bluff

Twenty acres of promontory dividing two seas: a surf beach on one side, a still bay on the other.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Curtain Bluff occupies about twenty acres on a rocky promontory at the southern tip of Antigua, near Old Road. The bluff is the property and gives it its name: it cuts the estate in two, with the open Atlantic on one side, where the swell rolls in and people surf, and a sheltered bay on the other, calm enough to float in. One holding, two seas, and a walk of a few minutes between them. Nothing else in this collection divides its shoreline that way, and the estate was chosen for exactly that reason rather than acquired and then explained.

Howard Hulford, a former wartime pilot, spent the late 1950s looking for the site and opened twenty-two rooms here in February 1962. It grew to seventy-two rooms and suites on the same ground, all facing the sea, and ran as a family house for sixty-two years, latterly under his widow Chelle. In November 2024 Tim and Pat Scott, British guests of long standing, bought it, keeping the management and all two hundred and thirty staff, with a renovation running over three years from 2025. The house is fully inclusive and has no televisions in the rooms.

Two climates on one title. The bluff does what acreage does elsewhere. Twenty acres buy a choice of weather, which is a use of ground rather than a quantity of it.

Grown threefold on the same land. Twenty-two rooms became seventy-two without the estate getting any larger. The register records that, because a holding this size filling up is a different proposition from one that has not.

Who it is not for

Curtain Bluff is wrong for travellers who want a large estate: twenty acres are crossed on foot in minutes and the promontory is the whole of it. It is wrong for anyone who wants a room with a screen, since the house has never put televisions in them. It is wrong for guests who want the property settled, because a three-year renovation began in 2025 under new owners. For a Caribbean holding at scale, Little Dix Bay keeps five hundred acres on Virgin Gorda.
