Jamaica

5 resorts in Jamaica, 3 of them written in full. The register holds 5 in Island & Coastal Hideaway.

5 records, one written. GoldenEye grew from the fifteen acres Ian Fleming bought in 1946 for a house on a cliff into fifty-two, added to by Chris Blackwell across the decades after he bought it in 1976. The ground was assembled, not acquired, and the seam between the two owners is still legible in it.

The estate's edge is neighbourly rather than defensive. Oracabessa is a working banana port with a population, not scenery, and Blackwell's foundation runs the bay's fish sanctuary and community programmes in it — so part of what the estate does happens outside its own line. Villas within the grounds are privately owned, so there are neighbours inside it too.

Four records unread. Jamaica's north coast in this collection is likely to keep raising the same question: how much of an estate's character belongs to the town beside it.
