Malaysia
10 resorts in Malaysia, 1 of them written in full. The register holds 6 in Asian Private Resort, 3 in Island & Coastal Hideaway, 1 in Country, Mountain, Lake & Desert Retreat.
10 records, one written, and that one is among the register's clearest acts of restraint.
The Datai holds about nineteen hectares at the end of the road on Langkawi, inside a much larger rainforest it does not own. Kerry Hill set the resort back from Datai Bay — on a ridge forty metres above the sea and three hundred metres from it — so that guests would be in the canopy rather than on the sand. Almost nobody with a bay like that has declined to build on it.
The estate belongs to the Malaysian state's investment arm, which is a rung of the ownership ladder this register finds nowhere else in Southeast Asia.
Nine records unread. What the written one establishes is that a Malaysian holding should be measured against the forest around it and credited only with the clearing.
