Zannier Sonop
Ten tents on granite boulders inside thirteen thousand eight hundred private acres of southern Namibia.
Zannier Sonop holds thirteen thousand eight hundred acres of private nature reserve in the Hardap region of southern Namibia, on the edge of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Ten tented suites are built among and on top of large granite boulders, raised on decks so that the rock rather than the desert floor carries them, and the whole is dressed as a nineteen-twenties safari lodge in colonial furniture, brass and canvas. The estate is the opposite case to Serra Cafema in the same country: thirteen thousand eight hundred acres held outright, against three hundred thousand hectares merely used.
The boulders matter to the reading. A tent set on granite leaves the desert floor as it was and makes the building reversible, which is a different relation to ground from a foundation; and a holding of this size around ten suites means the estate's territory is almost entirely unbuilt. The house carries three Michelin keys and a Green Globe certification. The register notes that the opening year, the means of access and the tenure of the thirteen thousand eight hundred acres are not stated in the material consulted here, and carries none of the three.
Thirteen thousand eight hundred acres for ten tents. The ratio is the record here, because almost the whole of this holding is unbuilt desert reserve, and that emptiness is precisely what the acreage was bought to hold.
Built on the rock, not in the ground. Tents raised on granite leave the desert floor as they found it. This estate's relation to its land is reversible, which few holdings here can claim.
Who it is not for
Sonop is wrong for anyone who wants game in quantity, since this is desert reserve rather than a river system. It is wrong for travellers who want to step out of their room onto level ground, as the suites sit on top of granite boulders. It is wrong for anyone who needs the dates settled, because no opening year is published in this record. For a Namibian holding of far greater extent and no ownership at all, Serra Cafema works on Himba land.
