Huvafen Fushi Maldives
A small island where every villa has a pool, so the pool became the unit the ground is measured in.
Huvafen Fushi occupies Nakatchafushi, a small densely planted coral island in North Male Atoll, thirty minutes by speedboat from the airport. Two jetties of overwater bungalows arc out into the lagoon and the rest of the accommodation stands under the trees on the sand. What sets the entry apart is a decision taken at the start: every villa here has a private pool, on the beach and over the water alike. On an island this size that is a land-use rule rather than an amenity, because a plot with a pool cannot be small, and the number of plots is therefore capped at somewhere in the mid-forties.
The resort opened in July 2004, developed by Per AQUUM to a design by the New Zealand studio Glade Architects, and is counted at forty-four villas in some listings and forty-six in others. The house reef lies about twenty-five metres off the sand, close enough that the reef is part of the usable estate rather than an excursion. The spa was built into the lagoon below the waterline, the first of its kind, so the property extended downward where it could not extend outward. Guests under twelve are not accommodated.
The pool as a unit of land. Give every villa its own water and the island can hold only so many. The density here was set by a design decision rather than by the size of the island, and the register records the mechanism.
Building down instead of out. With no room to spread, the estate went below the lagoon for its spa and out onto two jetties for its bungalows. The territory was extended in the only directions available.
Who it is not for
Huvafen Fushi is wrong for families: the minimum age is twelve and the house is arranged for adults. It is wrong for travellers who want a large island to walk, since Nakatchafushi is small and circled quickly. It is wrong for anyone who wants distance from the capital, because Male is thirty minutes away and this is a busy stretch of atoll. For an island in this archipelago large enough to have an interior, Soneva Fushi is on the same shelf.
