Naladhu Private Island Maldives

Twenty houses on a small island that leans on the two resorts across its own lagoon.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Naladhu occupies Veligandu Huraa in the Malé atolls, half an hour by speedboat from the airport, and holds twenty houses of about three hundred square metres each. The island is small and its area is nowhere published. What distinguishes it is not the ground but the arrangement: Naladhu is one of three properties its operator holds on the same lagoon, and its guests cross to Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli for restaurants, dive centre and activities. The quiet here is bought by putting almost nothing on this island and keeping the rest of the operation on the other two.

Each house has a pool of thirty-five square metres, an open-air bathing pavilion and a House Master on call through the day and night. Beach Houses open onto sand and lagoon; Ocean Houses stand over the water with no direct beach at all, served by a private cabana a short walk away. There is one dining room, run without a menu: guests say what they want. Counts are published at twenty houses and, in one listing, nineteen. Sources also disagree on which atoll the island sits in, South Malé or North.

Privacy by subtraction. The island carries twenty houses and one restaurant because everything else was left on the neighbouring two. What reads as seclusion is a division of labour across a lagoon.

A boundary that opens inward. The line is firm against the world and deliberately porous towards its own siblings. Guests leave the island most days and the arrangement assumes it.

Who it is not for

Naladhu is wrong for travellers who want everything on one island: the dive centre, the spa menu and most of the dining are on the two resorts across the lagoon. It is wrong for anyone booking an Ocean House and expecting sand at the door, since those stand over water and the beach is a walk. It is wrong for guests who want a large island to move around. For a Maldivian island used as land rather than as a jetty, Soneva Fushi is on the same shelf.
