Indonesia

22 resorts in Indonesia, 7 of them written in full. The register holds 21 in Asian Private Resort, 1 in Island & Coastal Hideaway.

22 records across Bali, Java, Sumba, Lombok and the smaller islands. The country where this register finds its widest range of relationships between an estate and the people already living on the ground.

Amandari is built as a Balinese village on the rim of the Ayung gorge and has no boundary at all on its village side: a public path crosses the estate to three shrines at the river. Four Seasons Sayan, across the same gorge, is entered over a single suspension bridge and hides sixty keys under a rooftop pond. One valley, two opposite answers, nine years apart.

NIHI holds five hundred and sixty-seven acres on Sumba under a published undertaking that only sixty-five will ever be built on, and the beach below is where the villages fish, wash ponies and race horses — a fact the resort states on its own pages rather than one this register had to find. Bawah holds six islands inside a thousand hectares of protected sea, bought to stop the dynamite fishing and opened as a hotel to pay for it.

Amanjiwo is the country's hardest case and the entry says so: a small site in a natural amphitheatre whose real holding is a two-kilometre sightline to Borobudur across fields that belong to farmers. The world here is composed, not enclosed.
