Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

Seven hectares of gorge entered across a bridge, with the main building buried under a pond.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

The resort holds about seven hectares, seventeen or eighteen acres, on the western side of the Ayung gorge at Sayan, a quarter of an hour above Ubud. The ground is steep and the estate uses it vertically: rice terraces at the top, villas stepping down the slope, a pool a few metres from the river at the bottom. Arrival is across a suspension bridge some fifty-five metres long, over the canopy, to a circular lotus pond that appears to float above the trees. From there the resort is not visible at all. The guest descends a staircase to find it underneath.

John Heah designed the property, which opened in 1998, and the inversion is his: the main building was turned upside down and roofed with the pond, so that what stands on the skyline is water. Eighteen suites sit inside that structure and forty-two free-standing villas are worked into the slope below, sunk and thatched so that the density reads far lower than it is. The terraces on the estate are planted and worked rather than ornamental. A shuttle runs to Ubud, and the village of Sayan is at the top of the drive.

Territory hidden rather than displayed. Sixty keys on seven hectares is a dense holding, and the plan spends its ingenuity on concealing that. The ground was used by burying things in it.

Entered by crossing. The bridge is the boundary. Amandari, across the same gorge, has no line at all on its village side; here the estate begins where the ground drops away and there is one way in.

Who it is not for

Sayan is wrong for travellers who cannot manage steps: the estate falls down a gorge and stairs and slopes connect everything. It is wrong for anyone who wants the sea, since this is inland Bali and the water is a river. It is wrong for guests who want a large estate to roam, because seven hectares carrying sixty keys is a compact place however well it hides itself. For the other answer to the same valley, Amandari sits on the opposite side.
