Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort
A strip between the highway and the Sea of Cortez, with thirty private residences inside the same boundary.
Las Ventanas holds a stretch of the Los Cabos corridor at kilometre 19.5 of the Transpeninsular highway, between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, running from the road down to the beach. Published site figures range from eighteen to twenty-two acres. The land is desert meeting sea, and the landscaping treats it as such rather than importing a tropical garden. The boundary is closed and the beachfront is the resort's own, but it is not empty of neighbours: thirty privately owned residences stand inside the same line, in oceanfront buildings served by the resort. Anyone reading this collection's question here should read it as an estate shared with owners.
The resort opened in July 1997, built for Rosewood by the Dallas firms HKS and SWA Group, and it is the property that began the corridor's shift from fishing coast to the most expensive coastline in Mexico. Accommodation is published as eighty-four suites and villas, with a further count of eighty-five in circulation; sizes run from junior suites of about ninety square metres to a mansion of some 2,600. Many have private pools and terraces. Restaurants, spa and beach serve the estate and its residents alone, and the property runs year-round.
Two owners of the same ground. The residences are the structural fact of this territory: guests and owners share paths, beach and service, and the estate is designed for both. That is unusual in the register and it belongs in the deck, not the footnotes.
Desert as the material, not the backdrop. The planting is dry, the light is hard and the ground between villas is stone and cactus. The privacy comes from spacing across open land rather than from screening by foliage.
Who it is not for
Las Ventanas is wrong for travellers who want an estate with no one living in it: thirty residences are owned inside the boundary, and their owners are neighbours rather than guests. It is wrong for those who picture a green resort garden, since this is desert coast and the planting stays dry. It is wrong for anyone who wants to walk out to a town in the evening, because the estate sits on a highway corridor and everything else is a drive. For village life in Los Cabos, the address register is the place to look.
