United States
16 resorts in United States, 9 of them written in full. The register holds 10 in Country, Mountain, Lake & Desert Retreat, 6 in Americas Estate.
16 records, three written, split between Hawaii, the desert southwest and the mainland coasts. The country where public right runs through private ground most visibly.
Hawaii guarantees access to its shoreline, and an old Hawaiian trail found during planning crosses Hualalai and was restored and kept. Lanai is sharper still: the resort holds about thirty-six acres, and the resort's owner holds ninety-eight per cent of an inhabited island of ninety thousand — which are different facts, and the register keeps them apart rather than letting the second flatter the first.
Amangiri is the counterweight. Six hundred acres of private freehold at Canyon Point, in a region where almost every other acre is federal or tribal land, which is what makes it remarkable rather than its size.
American acreage is usually published and usually covers more than the hotel. Hualalai's eight hundred and sixty acres are a resort, a golf course and a neighbourhood under one master plan, and the division between them is nowhere stated.
