Mandarin Oriental, Canouan
Forty keys inside a gated estate that is the whole northern half of a small inhabited island.
Mandarin Oriental, Canouan stands on Godahl Beach on the northeast coast of Canouan in the Grenadines, and the figure attached to it — twelve hundred acres — is not the hotel's. It is the gated Grenadines Estate, inside which the hotel is one operation among several: villas, a golf course, a marina and further restaurants that belong to the estate rather than to the house. The island is about three and a half miles by a mile and a quarter, and the estate is its entire northern half. The other half is where the island's roughly seventeen hundred residents live, in and around Charlestown, with the wharf and the airport.
The house opened under Mandarin Oriental in 2019 on the site of what had been the Pink Sands club, and it is counted at twenty-six suites with thirteen villas — six lagoon villas and seven patio villas — or forty keys by another count. Two overwater treatment villas were added to the hillside spa in 2022. The golf course was laid out by Jim Fazio. Canouan is surrounded by one of the largest living reefs in the Caribbean, and its Carib name is usually given as the island of turtles.
The hotel and the estate are different holdings. Twelve hundred acres is the size of the gated development, not of the house. The register carries the figure and says what it covers, as it did at Hualalai.
Half an island, with the other half lived in. A twelve-hundred-acre estate covering the north of a three-mile island, with the town in the south, is closer to Lanai's arrangement than to a resort with grounds.
Who it is not for
Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is wrong for travellers who want to be alone on an island: the southern half is a working community of some seventeen hundred people, and the estate itself carries villas, a marina and other operators. It is wrong for anyone who wants an easy arrival, since the island is reached by a connecting flight. It is wrong for guests expecting the hotel to hold the acreage quoted for it. For a Grenadine island held by one owner with nobody else on it, Petit St. Vincent is a short hop south.
