Asian & Indian Ocean Original
Soneva, Huvafen Fushi and the houses that set the private-resort idea before the brands arrived.
5 records from the founding generation of the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian private resort — Soneva and the houses built to its arithmetic. The shelf is small because the first movers were few.
What these properties established was that an island could be used as land. Soneva Fushi kept Kunfunadhoo as forest and hid the villas inside it, on one of the largest islands in the Maldives. Soneva Jani holds five islands and leaves four of them empty. Soneva Kiri took forty-one hectares in one corner of an inhabited island and put its airstrip on a different island altogether.
The inversion they made possible is visible elsewhere in the register: Gili Lankanfushi, founded as Soneva Gili, owns an island and sleeps nobody on it. Reading this shelf explains why that is a decision rather than an accident.
Wrong for travellers who want the newest thing. These are properties of the nineties and two-thousands, rebuilt rather than reinvented, and they read as their age.
