Soneva Fushi
One of the largest islands in the Maldives, kept as forest, with the villas hidden inside it.
Kunfunadhoo runs roughly a kilometre and a half end to end and some four hundred metres across, which in this archipelago is a great deal of land. Soneva Fushi treats it as forest rather than frontage. The interior was left dense, sand tracks were cut through it instead of promenades, and the villas were put among the trees with walls of vegetation between them. Guests move by bicycle because walking the length of the island takes real time. The result is the rarest thing in the Maldives: an inland. Most resorts here are a ring of rooms around a beach, and the land in the middle is a service compound.
Sonu and Eva Shivdasani opened the resort in 1995 with a fraction of the villas it holds now, and the count has never been published consistently since. What has stayed constant is the density: large houses, wide gaps, and a rule that the treeline is not cleared for a view. Around the villas the estate carries its own working landscape - gardens that feed the kitchens, a glass studio, an observatory, a waste plant that predates the industry's interest in such things. The island is inside the Baa Atoll biosphere reserve, which constrains what may be built on it.
Land used as land. The subject here is not the lagoon but the ground behind it: forest, tracks, and the distance those tracks put between one house and the next. That distance is what the estate was bought to protect.
A resort with an interior. Almost every Maldivian property is a perimeter. This one has a middle you can get lost in, and it is the middle rather than the water that guests describe when they come back.
Who it is not for
Soneva Fushi is wrong for travellers who want the sea from every window: many villas sit back in the trees, and the walk to the water is part of the design. It is wrong for anyone who dislikes insects and heat away from the breeze, which is what a forested island means in practice. It is wrong for guests who want a short transfer, since the island lies a seaplane flight from the capital. For water rather than land, the island register reads the same property differently.
