Thailand

24 resorts in Thailand, 11 of them written in full. The register holds 17 in Asian Private Resort, 2 in Country, Mountain, Lake & Desert Retreat, 2 in Asian & Indian Ocean Original.

24 records, and the country that taught this collection to read a shoreline against the law rather than against a brochure.

Every beach in Thailand is public. That single fact reorders the entries: Amanpuri's sand on Pansea is quiet not because the resort holds it but because the only ways onto it run through hotels; Trisara sits above a public shore and holds the hillside; Rayavadee's three beaches lie inside Krabi Marine National Park and fill with day boats from mid-morning. All three have been described as private by someone, and one of them by the operator itself.

The second Thai fact is tenure. Foreign freehold is barred, so a resort's residences are held on long leases through holding companies — around thirty of them inside Trisara's forty acres. A reader who takes ownership here to mean a deed will misread the country.

What Thailand supplies instead of private sand is topography and the plan drawn on it: a headland held whole at Amanpuri, a fenced hillside above a working island at Yao Noi, a coconut grove with no road to it at Rayavadee, seven acres of thirty-year planting holding a town at arm's length at Chiva-Som.
