Urban Sanctuary
A deliberately small shelf: walled gardens inside cities that behave like estates. Never more than a handful.
4 records, and the smallest and most contested shelf in the register. These are properties with real ground inside or beside a town, which by this collection's own test is a difficult position to hold.
The test says no street outside. A shelf admitting town addresses therefore has to justify each one by what lies between the building and the street. Chiva-Som holds about seven acres of thirty-year planting between a main road and a public Thai beach, and the planting is dense enough to do the work.
Two properties have already left this shape rather than joined it. La Réserve de Beaulieu was removed from the collection entirely and its code retired, because a seawater pool at a sea wall is not a territory. Amangalla is filed as PROPOSED for the same reason: a plot on Church Street inside a fort that belongs to a town.
Wrong for travellers who want grounds to disappear into, and wrong as a shortcut for any town hotel with a garden. The shelf exists for the exceptions and is kept deliberately hard to enter.
