Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

Two islands in North Male Atoll, one for the resort and one for the spa, two minutes apart by boat.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa holds two islands in North Male Atoll: the resort island itself, with ninety-six rooms laid out as Maldivian villages of thatched roofs, timber floors and lattice panels, and a second, smaller island given over entirely to the spa and reached by a two-minute boat. That second island is what puts the record in this column. An estate that moves one of its functions onto ground of its own is holding more territory than its guest count suggests, and the crossing between the two is internal rather than an excursion.

The house opened in May 1998 and reopened in September 2006 after rebuilding. Neither island's area is published and this record carries no figure. What the estate has built on the ground it holds is a marine discovery centre with resident biologists, open to local schoolchildren as well as to guests, and a surf operation: Kuda Huraa lies near several North Male breaks and hosts an annual championship with Tropicsurf. The atoll is the busy one, close to Male and its airport, so what two islands buy here is separation within reach of the runway rather than distance from it.

One estate, two islands. The spa stands on ground of its own, two minutes away by the hotel's boat. The holding is larger than the resort island, and the crossing is internal to it.

Territory in the busiest atoll. North Male is the most developed water in the Maldives. What this estate buys with two islands is separation close to the airport, not remoteness from it.

Who it is not for

Kuda Huraa is wrong for anyone who wants remoteness, since this is the atoll nearest Male and its airport. It is wrong for travellers who need the ground measured, as neither island's area is published and this record carries none. It is wrong for anyone who wants still water, because the breaks that bring surfers here are the reason the house holds a championship. For a Maldivian island far from the airport, Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in its atoll.

  • The operator's own press facts - North Male Atoll; opened May 1998 and reopened September 2006; ninety-six rooms designed as Maldivian villages with thatched roofs, timber floors and decorative lattice panels; the naturopathy spa occupies its own separate island reached by a two-minute boat ride; a Marine Discovery Centre described as an interactive research and education centre for guests and local schoolchildren; a Tropicsurf partnership and the annual Surfing Champions Trophy; five restaurants, three pools. No island area is published.
  • NOT PUBLISHED - the area of either island. None is carried.
  • The 2006 reopening follows the 2004 tsunami on the published record of the atoll; the operator's facts state the dates without stating the cause, and no cause is asserted here.
