Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

An island in a biosphere reserve, built on a coconut plantation, with the research centre as part of the estate.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru holds an island in Baa Atoll, inside a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, on the site of a former coconut plantation. The property publishes no area for it. A hundred and three villas are distributed along the beaches and out over the lagoon, which makes this one of the larger holdings in the Maldivian part of the register. The plantation matters to the reading: the ground was already cleared and planted for one crop before the resort arrived, so what the estate inherited was a working island rather than untouched land, and the garden that now supplies its kitchens stands in the same relation to that ground.

The designation is the second half of the boundary. A biosphere reserve governs what may be done to an island and to the water around it, which means this estate holds its ground inside a rule it did not write - the same arrangement as the fortified cape at Cap Rocat and the protected island at Soneva Fushi. The house has turned the constraint into a department: a marine discovery centre with resident biologists, a manta programme said by one account to keep the largest database of individual rays anywhere, and a turtle rehabilitation that has released more than a hundred and fifty. Arrival is by seaplane.

The island was a plantation first. What the estate took on was cleared and cropped ground, not wilderness. A hundred and three villas now stand on a working island that changed its crop.

Held inside a designation. A biosphere reserve rules what may happen to this island and to the water around it. The boundary here is partly legal, and the estate did not draw it.

Who it is not for

Landaa Giraavaru is wrong for anyone who wants a small island, since a hundred and three villas is a settlement by Maldivian measure. It is wrong for travellers who will not fly a seaplane, as that is the approach. It is wrong for anyone who needs the acreage stated, because the property publishes none and the one figure in circulation repeats another resort's exactly. For a Baa Atoll island of fifty villas instead, Milaidhoo keeps its own reef within the same reserve.

Sources

  • The operator's own press facts - opened November 2006 on Baa Atoll, within a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, on the site of a former coconut plantation; a hundred and three villas in native Maldivian style with steep thatched roofs and coral walls; four restaurants and two lounges, a fifty-metre pool; resident marine biologists leading environmental and education programmes; produce from the resort's own garden. No site area is published.
  • Specialist island guide - forty-four hectares (about a hundred and nine acres); a hundred and three accommodations across beach, water and overwater categories; the Maldives' most sophisticated marine discovery centre; a manta database of over 4,800 individual rays; more than 150 endangered turtles treated and released; house reef around roughly three-quarters of the island; seaplane only, thirty-five minutes from Male

Sources disagree
the forty-four hectare figure rests on a single secondary source and is identical to the published area of One&Only Reethi Rah, LHL-E-206, in this same register. It is treated as unreliable and no area is carried.
