One&Only Reethi Rah

Forty-four hectares, more than half of them made: the island was reshaped to manufacture six kilometres of shore.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Reethi Rah covers forty-four hectares, a hundred and nine acres, in North Male Atoll, and it is the only entry in this register whose territory was largely built. More than sixty per cent of the island is reclaimed: thousands of tons of sand were moved out of the shallow lagoon to extend the original land into an octopus shape with arms and bays. The purpose was coastline. The finished island carries about six kilometres of shore cut into twelve separate beaches, where a natural island of the same area would have had one long strand and a great deal less of it.

The resort opened in May 2005 to a design by Jean-Michel Gathy, and villa counts are published at a hundred and eighteen, a hundred and twenty-two, a hundred and twenty-eight and a hundred and thirty. Each stands on its own piece of sand or its own deck over the lagoon, with a minimum of about a hundred and thirty-five square metres. The island is crossed by bicycle or buggy rather than on foot. It runs on its own clock, set an hour ahead of Male, which buys an extra hour of evening light and is a small statement of the same kind as the shoreline.

Territory as engineering. Every other estate in this collection was bought. This one was partly manufactured, and the thing manufactured was frontage: twelve beaches where the atoll would have given one.

Its own hour. The island keeps a time zone that does not exist outside it. It is a trivial fact and an exact one: the boundary here extends to the clock.

Who it is not for

Reethi Rah is wrong for travellers who want the island as they found it: the greater part of this one was made, and the coves were cut rather than formed. It is wrong for anyone who wants to walk everywhere, since the island is large and the buggies exist for a reason. It is wrong for guests seeking a small house, because this is a full-scale resort with eight restaurants. For a Maldivian island left as it was, Soneva Fushi is on the same shelf.
