Rosewood Luang Prabang

A forested valley ten minutes from Luang Prabang, with its own waterfall inside the line.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Rosewood Luang Prabang holds a hilltop forest in the Nahm Dong valley, about ten minutes by road from Luang Prabang, with twenty-three keys on it: guestrooms, suites, villas, and six tents of seventy-five square metres set apart on a hillside, each one given to a Laotian hill tribe. Bill Bensley modelled the place on a Laotian hill station of about 1900. It opened on the twenty-seventh of March 2017. The estate publishes no area for the valley it stands in, and this record carries none of its own; what the operator does state is the form of the place, a forest bowl hidden in a valley with the town a short drive away and nothing between the two but hill.

What it holds instead of an acreage is water. A natural waterfall stands on the site, beside the swimming pool and framing the spa, which is a rarer thing in this register than a beach: a river mouth or a shoreline is shared with whoever else reaches it, and a fall inside a valley is not. The holding is a bowl with its own water in it, ten minutes from a UNESCO town, and the privacy comes from the shape of the ground rather than from the distance to the next building.

The water is inside the boundary. A waterfall on the site is held in a way a shoreline never is. Most of this register's water is shared with whoever else can reach it.

No acreage, and a valley instead. The estate publishes no figure, so what the record counts is the form of the ground: a forested bowl with one way in and twenty-three rooms in it.

Who it is not for

Rosewood Luang Prabang is wrong for anyone who counts acres, since the estate publishes none and this record carries none. It is wrong for travellers who want to walk into town, as the valley is a ten-minute drive from it. It is wrong for anyone who wants the river, because the water here is a fall in a forest and not the Mekong. For a Laotian house inside the town itself, Amantaka stands on a former hospital's grounds and is not yet written here.
