Six Senses Laamu

The only resort in its atoll: the boundary is not the island's edge but the emptiness of everything around it.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Six Senses Laamu stands on Olhuveli in Laamu Atoll, and it is the sole resort in the atoll. That is unusual enough to be the entry's defining fact. Elsewhere in the Maldives an estate's privacy ends at the reef, with neighbours visible across the water; here the horizon is inhabited islands at a distance and nothing else. The island itself is modest and much of the accommodation stands over the lagoon, so the land component is small. The territory that matters is the water and reef around it, held in practice by the absence of any competitor for it.

The resort opened in April 2011, built in timber and thatch on a light footprint, and published villa counts sit between 94 and 100. A small number of beachfront residences were sold to private owners and returned to the rental programme, so the estate carries owners alongside guests. The reef off the island is largely unvisited by other operators, which is what the marine programme is built on. Transfers run by domestic flight and then boat, which puts the property further from the capital than most of the register's Maldivian entries.

Scarcity as an estate. Owning the only resort in an atoll is a territorial position rather than a service one. Nothing else is being built within sight, and that is the asset.

A small island holding a large sea. The buildable ground is limited and mostly given to the overwater jetties. What the property really controls is reef, and it manages it accordingly.

Who it is not for

Laamu is wrong for travellers who want a large island to walk: the ground here is small and quickly circled. It is wrong for anyone who dislikes long transfers, since the journey runs by domestic flight and then boat. It is wrong for guests who want a resort with neighbours and options nearby, because there are none. For the island itself as the subject rather than the water around it, the island register covers this property too.
