Six Senses Con Dao

Twelve hectares inside a national park, on an island whose best-known landmark is a prison.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Six Senses Con Dao holds about twelve hectares on Dat Doc beach on Con Son, the largest of sixteen islands off Vietnam's southern coast. The holding sits inside Con Dao National Park, which covers most of the archipelago on land and at sea, and it is a small piece of it: mountains behind, a beach of one and a half to two kilometres in front, and Con Dao Town a few minutes along the road. Fifty villas are strung along the sand in the form of a fishing village, each with a pool, built in reclaimed teak and bamboo.

The island's history is not a footnote to its geography. Con Son held the French penal colony from 1862 and then the South Vietnamese prison system, and the cell blocks are the place most visitors to the island come to see. A resort here occupies a corner of an island best known for confinement, and the register records that rather than describing an untouched corner and stopping. The property opened in 2010, was among the first international houses on the archipelago, and added a spa village of about one and a half hectares within the same ground.

Twelve hectares borrowed from a park. The forest and the sea around this estate are protected public land. What the resort holds is the strip between them, and the enclosure is a designation rather than a purchase.

Dat Doc is called private and sits in a national park. The operator's own pages use the word. The register carries the claim and the fact side by side, as it does everywhere else on this shelf.

Who it is not for

Six Senses Con Dao is wrong for travellers who want a resort with nothing else around it: a town, an airport and a major historical site share this island. It is wrong for anyone who wants the beach to be the estate's, since the shore lies within a national park. It is wrong for guests who would rather not be near a place of that history, which is honest to say. For an estate whose enclosure was bought rather than designated, Nihi holds five hundred acres on Sumba.

Sources

  • Operator and trade material - resort of about twelve hectares, published also as 12.3, on Dat Doc beach on Con Son within Con Dao National Park; fifty pool villas and residences opened 2010; a spa and wellness village of about 1.5 hectares added within the grounds
  • Published history - Con Son carried the French penal colony from 1862 and later the South Vietnamese prison system; the prison complex is the island's principal visitor site
  • The operator describes Dat Doc as a private beach; it lies within a national park. The claim and the designation are both recorded and the question goes to the property.

Verification

Not yet checked
Sources disagree
the beach is given as 1.6 kilometres by the operator and as over 2 kilometres elsewhere; one listing calls the property the sole resort on the island, which the presence of Con Dao Town and other accommodation does not support.
