Six Senses Yao Noi

Ten hectares of forested hillside fenced off on a working island of rice, rubber and fishing.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

The resort holds about nine and a half hectares on the southern coast of Koh Yao Noi, midway between Phuket and Krabi. The land is a wooded slope rather than a beach strip, and the villas are set on stilts up the hill so that the trees stay between them. The boundary matters here more than at most entries in the register, because the island outside it is not a resort island at all: Koh Yao Noi is a working place of rice paddies, rubber smallholdings and fishing, ringed by an eighteen-kilometre road. The estate is a defined piece of that island, not a substitute for it.

Six Senses opened here in 2007 and renovated in 2011, and the property is counted at fifty-six pool villas, and at fifty-five in one listing. The ground carries its own farm - vegetable beds, mushroom house, chickens - along with a mangrove trail, tennis and a hilltop restaurant and pool at the top of the slope, which is where the height of the site is finally used. Access is by road to a Phuket marina and then by boat, so arrival and departure are on the resort's schedule rather than the guest's.

A boundary with a real outside. Most estates in this collection are surrounded by nothing. This one is surrounded by a village economy, and the fence is doing actual work.

Slope as the plan. The villas are stacked up a hillside rather than laid along a shore, so privacy comes from contour and canopy. There are several small beaches rather than one, and two of them lie inside the grounds.

Who it is not for

Yao Noi is wrong for travellers who want one long private beach: the resort has several small ones instead, the largest of them shared with the island, and its real asset is the hill behind. It is wrong for guests who find steep ground and buggy dependence tiring. It is wrong for anyone who wants to come and go freely, since every movement off the island is a boat booking. For the resort with the whole headland to itself, look to the Asian shelf's larger estates.

Sources

  • Trade listings and the resort's public record - site of about 9.6 hectares, or roughly 24 acres, on Koh Yao Noi; opening in 2007, renovation in 2011
  • MICHELIN Guide and operator material - fifty-six pool villas across the hillside
  • HOUSE OBSERVATION, 03.09.2026, inspected in person by the House - the resort has several beaches: one larger stretch the island's own people may also use, though few do, and two smaller ones inside the grounds that are private in practice
