Six Senses Samui
Twenty acres of headland at Samui's northern tip, water on three sides and the island behind it.
Six Senses Samui holds twenty acres - eight hectares by the house's own factsheet, nine by its own website - on a gently sloping headland at the northern tip of Koh Samui. The shape is the point. A headland is bounded by water on three sides and by a single line of land, which makes it the nearest thing to an island that is not one, and it is the answer this register looks for most often and finds most rarely. Sixty-six or sixty-seven villas, most with their own pools, are set down the slope so that each looks out across the Gulf and at the islands off the point rather than at the estate.
The holding is small - twenty acres is modest beside the hundred at Pimalai or the forty-two at Four Seasons on the same island - and the privacy comes almost entirely from the geometry. There is one way in, by land, and six kilometres of road from there to the island's airport. The beach lies at the foot of the headland and the house reaches it with a bar and a villa set directly on it. The counts disagree between the property's factsheet and the property's website, by one villa and by one hectare, and neither figure is carried here without the other.
A headland is the purest non-island boundary. Water closes three sides of this holding and one line of land closes the fourth. Twenty acres so bounded behave like a good deal more.
The house disagrees with itself. Eight hectares against nine, sixty-six villas against sixty-seven, between a factsheet and a website of the same property. Both figures are recorded and neither is chosen.
Who it is not for
Six Senses Samui is wrong for anyone who measures territory in acres, because twenty of them is the whole holding and the shape is doing the work. It is wrong for travellers who want distance, since the airport is six kilometres down the road. It is wrong for anyone who needs a settled number, as the house publishes two of each. For a Six Senses holding with real extent, Six Senses Laamu takes a Maldivian island whole.
