Hotel Pitrizza

The one house on this coast where the sand is inside the walk, not a boat ride away.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Pitrizza stands above the bay of Liscia di Vacca, north of Porto Cervo, on ground of granite outcrop and Mediterranean scrub. Luigi Vietti buried it there in 1963 for the Aga Khan's architectural committee: low structures worked in between the boulders, roofs turned into gardens, pergolas run out under the junipers. The estate is not large and its screening is topographic rather than measured in hectares. What separates it from its siblings along this coast is simple and worth naming: the private beach is a walk from the rooms, not a shuttle and not a boat, so the shore is inside the property rather than adjacent to it.

The house is counted at sixty-six rooms, suites and villas, with sixteen of the villas standing free and many carrying their own pools. A saltwater pool cut into the granite reads as an inlet rather than a construction, and the property has long claimed it as the first infinity pool built for a hotel, a claim the register carries as a claim. The estate left Marriott's Luxury Collection in 2023 and passed to LVMH management; after a three-year restoration it is scheduled to reopen as Cheval Blanc Pitrizza, with the owner remaining Qatar's Smeralda Holding. Reports of the relaunch date disagree.

Continuous to the waterline. Cala di Volpe reaches its sand by launch and Amanzoe by shuttle. Here the path from the villas runs to the beach and stops, which is the answer this collection was built to record.

The granite does the screening. There is no wall and no great acreage. Villas sit behind boulders and under junipers, and the privacy is a product of the rock the architect refused to clear.

Who it is not for

Pitrizza is wrong for travellers who want a large estate to move around in: the ground is compact and the separation between villas is a matter of metres and rocks. It is wrong for anyone seeking quiet in August, when Porto Cervo is three kilometres away and the coast fills. It is wrong for guests who want a property in a settled state, since the house is mid-restoration and changing hands and name. For the same coast with more ground and a detached beach, Cala di Volpe is on the same shelf.
