Amanzoe
A territory assembled from more than fifty separate plots, with its beach club six kilometres from the hill.
Amanzoe stands on the hilltop of Agios Panteleimonas above Porto Heli, on the eastern Peloponnese. The architect's record gives the hilltop plot as eight hectares; the whole estate, counting villas and the beach club, has been reported at ninety-six. The land was not bought as a parcel: more than fifty separate holdings were acquired over several years from different owners, farmland on the hillside and one plot on the bay at Korakia. That is the defining fact for this register. The world of its own here was assembled by conveyancing, and it is discontinuous - the sea frontage sits about six kilometres from the pavilions.
The resort opened in August 2012 to a design by Ed Tuttle, with landscape by doxiadis+, and reads as a hill of colonnades and courtyards in olive groves. Thirty-eight pavilions sit on the ridge with a dozen villas around them, several of the villas sold to private owners, and three pavilions stand at the beach club. The counts have moved with the building phases and are published variously. The approach is a dirt track through fields, which the property has never paved and which does more for the sense of arrival than any gate.
A world of its own, bought in pieces. Fifty deeds became one estate. Nothing else in this shelf was put together that way, and it explains both the size and the gaps in it.
Two grounds, not one. The hill is the property and the bay is the property, and between them lies six kilometres of countryside that is not. The shuttle is the estate's connective tissue.
Who it is not for
Amanzoe is wrong for travellers who want to walk to the water: the beach club is a drive, and the hill has views of the sea rather than access to it. It is wrong for anyone who dislikes exposure, since the ridge is hot, bright and shadeless at midday. It is wrong for guests wanting a lively destination, because Porto Heli is quiet and the islands are a boat away. For the Aman name as a class rather than the ground beneath it, the fashion register reads this property differently.
