Villa TreVille

Two hectares of cliff at Positano, cut with stairs and lifts down to a dock the estate owns.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Villa TreVille holds a rocky promontory of about two hectares on the edge of Positano, and it is the only property in that town with grounds in the sense this register uses. Everything else there is a house on a street. Here the land runs from the road down the cliff in terraces of garden, pergola and path, with stone stairways and lifts cut into the rock, ending at sundecks and a dock where the estate keeps its own launch. The boundary is vertical rather than horizontal: the town is a few minutes away and the property never touches it.

The estate was Franco Zeffirelli's home for thirty-five years and was converted afterwards into four separate houses - Bianca, Rosa, Azzurra and Tre Pini - holding fifteen suites between them. The gardens supply the kitchen, the interiors keep the director's ceramics and furniture, and the arrangement remains residential: guests occupy houses in a garden rather than rooms in a hotel. Positano is about twenty minutes away on foot along the coast road, and the estate runs a shuttle for guests who would rather not walk it; the launch does the same journey by water.

Vertical territory. The measure here is not width of frontage but depth of descent. Two hectares of cliff buys more separation than two hectares of flat ground ever would.

The exception on the Amalfi coast. Positano's other houses are addresses; this one is an estate with a dock. That difference is precisely what puts it on this shelf and leaves the rest of the town elsewhere in the House.

Who it is not for

Villa TreVille is wrong for travellers who cannot manage stairs, since the estate is a cliff and the lifts do not reach everywhere. It is wrong for anyone who wants a beach, because the water is reached from sundecks and a dock rather than sand. It is wrong for guests who want the town at the door, as the point of the layout is that Positano stays outside it. For the town itself and its season, the address register is the place to look.
