Monte-Carlo Beach
A pine-shaded promontory on French soil, owned by a Monegasque company, with its own bay and its own club.
The Monte-Carlo Beach stands on a wooded point at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, immediately across the frontier from Monaco. The ground is a small peninsula of pines running down to a pebble bay, with the hotel, a seawater pool laid out to Olympic length, tennis and the beach club all inside the same line. On this coast, where the corniche runs a few metres from most hotel doors, holding a whole point with a shore attached is the exception. The estate belongs to the Societe des Bains de Mer, a Monegasque company operating on French territory, so even the ownership crosses a border.
The hotel opened in 1929 to a design by Roger Seassal and was reworked in 2009 by India Mahdavi. Room counts are published inconsistently, at forty and at fifty-four depending on whether suites are listed separately. The beach club predates the hotel by a year and remains the property's complication: it admits members and day guests, so the boundary that is absolute at the treeline is deliberately porous at the sand. The hotel opens for the summer alone and is shut through autumn, winter and spring. A shuttle runs to the group's Monaco houses, and their guests come the other way to the club.
A point, not a frontage. The land wraps the bay rather than facing it, and the result is the one address in Monaco's orbit where a stay reads as a beach holiday rather than as a city hotel.
A boundary that admits members. The club takes members and guests of the group's Monaco hotels, so in August the estate's own guests are a minority on their own sand. That is a real qualification on the privacy and is recorded rather than smoothed over.
Who it is not for
The Monte-Carlo Beach is wrong for anyone travelling outside summer, since the hotel simply closes. It is wrong for travellers who want a shore to themselves in August, because the club brings in members and the group's other guests. It is wrong for anyone expecting the scale of the larger estates on this shelf, since the ground is a small point crossed in minutes. For the legend of the coast rather than the land, the address register covers it.
