Chiva-Som Hua Hin

Seven acres of planting on a town beachfront, holding the traffic of Hua Hin at arm's length.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Chiva-Som occupies about seven acres on the shore at Nong Kae, on the southern edge of Hua Hin, with Petchkasem Road behind it and the Gulf of Thailand in front. The town is immediately outside and the beach is public Thai shore. What the estate holds is the ground between the two, and what it has done with it is plant: three decades of tropical garden laid out thickly enough that guests have reported realising only after several days that they were in the middle of a working resort town. The boundary here is horticultural, and it was built rather than bought.

Boonchu Rojanastien, a former deputy prime minister of Thailand, demolished his own beach house on the site in 1993 and opened Chiva-Som — haven of life — on 19 April 1995, as the first resort in Asia built around wellness rather than around a beach. His son Krip has run it since 2007. Fifty-four rooms, suites and pavilions stand in the gardens and along the sea, refurbished from 2019 under Ed Tuttle at a reported twenty million dollars. Sources give the estate as seven acres and, elsewhere, as seven hectares.

A garden built as a wall. Seven acres cannot exclude a town by distance, so the estate excluded it by planting. That is the oldest answer to this collection's question and one of the few here achieved entirely by cultivation.

A private house that stayed private. The ground was a politician's own beach property before it was anything else, and the plan still reads as a residence extended rather than a resort laid out.

Who it is not for

Chiva-Som is wrong for travellers who want a shore of their own: the beach is public Thai coast and Hua Hin uses it. It is wrong for anyone who wants an estate to roam, since seven acres are crossed in a few minutes. It is wrong for guests who want to eat and drink freely, because the kitchen is built around a wellness programme and the resort is arranged around consultations. For an estate that excludes a town by distance rather than by planting, Amanbagh keeps a walled valley.
