Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui
Forty-two acres of hillside above a cove, seventy villas on terraces, and a plan drawn to keep them apart.
Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui holds seventeen hectares - forty-two acres - of steep hillside above a cove on Koh Samui, about fifteen kilometres from the island's airport. Seventy villas, every one of them with a pool, are cut into terraces down the slope, and the resort runs on buggies because the gradient makes crossing the estate a decision rather than a habit. Bill Bensley laid it out in 2007, and the purpose of the plan is the separation the hill makes possible: a villa here looks at water and canopy rather than at its neighbours, which on an island as built up as Samui is what the acreage is for.
Samui is not a quiet island, and that is the context this territory answers. Forty-two acres is a large private holding by the standards of the island and it is held as one piece, the slope running from the ridge down to the shore; whether the beach at the bottom is exclusively the estate's is not stated in the material consulted here. The villas range from a hundred and three square metres to over fifteen hundred, so the holding carries both a hotel and a set of houses. The resort is open through the year and has two Michelin keys.
The gradient is the privacy. Forty-two acres of hillside separates seventy villas far more effectively than forty-two acres of flat ground would, and the plan was drawn to exploit it.
The acreage is not for remoteness. Fifteen kilometres from an airport, on one of Thailand's busiest islands, this holding buys a view with nothing in it. That is a different use of territory from distance.
Who it is not for
Koh Samui is wrong for anyone who equates territory with isolation, because the island's traffic begins at the gate and the airport is a quarter of an hour away. It is wrong for travellers who want to walk their resort, since the slope is steep enough that buggies do the moving. It is wrong for anyone who wants a long beach, as the frontage here is a single cove. For a Thai island holding that is genuinely remote, Soneva Kiri takes a hundred acres of Koh Kood.
