Trisara
Forty acres of hillside above Nai Thon, with a farm of ninety-six acres held apart from it.
Trisara occupies about forty acres of wooded hillside on the northwest coast of Phuket, above Nai Thon, with something near two thousand metres of coast below it. GFAB Architects terraced the villas down the slope and kept the existing hillside vegetation rather than clearing it, so the buildings sit in what was already there. Fifteen minutes from the airport and a long way from Patong, the estate is one of the few pieces of this coast that was not built out. Every villa has its own pool, which was unusual in Phuket when the house opened in 2004 and set the density.
The second holding is the interesting one. Pru Jampa, the farm that supplies the kitchens, runs to about ninety-six acres inland — more than twice the resort's own ground, held as a separate parcel. Inside the forty acres stand thirty-nine hotel villas and suites and around twenty-five to thirty privately owned residences, so the estate carries owners as well as guests. Montara Hospitality, a family Thai company, owns and runs it. Thai law bars foreign freehold, and the residences are reported to be held on long leases through holding companies.
More farm than resort. Ninety-six acres of growing ground against forty of hillside. The estate's larger half is inland, invisible from any villa, and exists to feed the smaller half.
Leasehold, not freehold. Thailand does not sell land to foreigners. What the owners inside this estate hold is a long lease through a company, which is a different answer to the collection's question than a deed.
Who it is not for
Trisara is wrong for travellers who want a beach that is theirs by right: Thai beaches are public, and what the estate holds is the hillside above the sand. It is wrong for anyone who wants Phuket's noise, since the northwest coast is quiet and Patong is a long drive. It is wrong for guests expecting to be alone on the ground, because around thirty residences are privately owned within it. For a Phuket headland held whole, Amanpuri is on the same shelf.
Sources
- Property record and trade coverage - estate of about forty acres above Nai Thon on Phuket's northwest coast with roughly two thousand metres of coastline; opened 2004; thirty-nine hotel pool villas and suites alongside about thirty privately owned residences; owner and operator Montara Hospitality Group
- Operator material - Pru Jampa, the estate's organic farm, is given at ninety-six acres and supplies the restaurants; architecture by GFAB Architects, built into the existing hillside vegetation
- Residences are reported to be held on long leasehold through offshore holding companies, Thai law barring foreign freehold; the structure is not published by the operator. The description of a private beach should be read against Thai law, which makes the shore public. Both to be confirmed.
