Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como
Nine separate houses in a botanical park on the eastern shore, run as one estate rather than one hotel.
The estate occupies a slope at Blevio on the eastern shore of Lake Como, five kilometres from the town of Como, in a botanical park of some fifty species planted over two centuries. What the property holds is not a building but a collection of them: nine eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses and outbuildings dispersed through the park down to the water, so guests live in what were separate villas and cross the garden between them. The lakefront is the estate's own, and a pool floats on the water in front of it. Blevio's road runs above, and the park falls away from it to the shore.
The centrepiece is Villa Roccabruna, a neoclassical house that belonged to the soprano Giuditta Pasta. The site opened as CastaDiva Resort in the 2000s, was bought by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in 2018 and reopened under its own name in 2019 after a full renovation. It is counted at seventy-five keys, published as twenty-four rooms, forty-nine suites and two standalone villas, and separately as seventy-three with two villas. A spa of about 1,330 square metres sits within the grounds. The house runs from March to January and closes for the deep winter.
An estate assembled from houses. Living here means occupying one of nine buildings rather than a floor of one. The plan gives the property a village structure that a single hotel on the same ground could not produce.
Its own waterline. The park runs to the lake and the frontage is held. On this shore, where most villas of this age were divided from their landings long ago, that is the fact worth recording.
Who it is not for
Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is wrong for travellers who want level ground: the estate is a slope and the buildings are connected by steps and paths. It is wrong for anyone who wants a village at the door, since Blevio is small and Como is a drive or a boat. It is wrong for guests travelling in deep winter, when the house closes. For a larger park on the same lake with its own frontage, Villa d'Este is on the opposite shore.
