Six Senses Douro Valley
A named quinta above the Douro, its boundary drawn for wine long before a hotel stood on it.
Six Senses Douro Valley occupies Quinta de Vale Abraao at Samodaes, near Lamego, above the Douro in what the house's own material calls the world's oldest demarcated wine region. The estate is a quinta, which in Portugal is a unit of land with a name, and that name is still the hotel's address. A renovated nineteenth-century manor house of honey-coloured stone stands at the centre of it, with seventy-one rooms and suites around it and villas with their own pools among the gardens, and the vines run over the rolling hills on every side.
The boundary matters more here than the acreage, which the house does not publish and this record does not carry. A quinta's line was drawn for viticulture inside a demarcated region, so the shape of this holding was settled by what could be planted and sold long before anyone put rooms on it. The estate reaches the river at a dock of its own, from which boats go out, and the kitchens work from the garden and a wood-fired bread oven. Porto's airport is an hour and a quarter to an hour and forty away by road.
The line was drawn for wine. A quinta is a named unit of land inside a demarcated region. This estate's boundary was settled by viticulture, and the hotel inherited it unchanged.
It reaches the river. The holding keeps a dock on the Douro and sends boats out from it. The water is the region's highway and is not the quinta's; the bank is.
Who it is not for
Douro Valley is wrong for anyone who wants the sea, since this is a river valley a long way inland. It is wrong for travellers who need the ground measured, as the house publishes no area and this record carries none. It is wrong for anyone who wants a quick arrival, because Porto is at least an hour and a quarter by road. For an estate whose water is a lake rather than a river, Villa d'Este holds twenty-five acres on Como.
