Villa d'Este

Ten hectares of Renaissance park running to its own lakefront, carrying more keys than any other estate here.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Villa d'Este holds ten hectares, twenty-five acres, of park at Cernobbio on Lake Como, running from the Via Regina down to the water. The ground was laid out for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who had Pellegrino Tibaldi build him a summer residence here between 1565 and 1570 on the site of a demolished nunnery, and the park has been reworked since into an English garden with a mosaic walk, fountains and a nymphaeum. The estate reaches the lake and holds its frontage, where a heated pool floats on the water itself. Eight tennis courts and a sporting club stand in the grounds.

The villa became a hotel in 1873 and is counted at about a hundred and fifty-two rooms and suites across the Cardinal Building and the Queen's Pavilion, with four private villas inside the property let separately. That density is worth stating: this is a full-scale hotel on ten hectares, where most estates in this register put a few dozen houses on the same ground or far more. The owner has also converted a hotel in Cernobbio into apartments whose residents are given access to the pool, sporting club and golf, so the estate serves people who do not stay in it.

A park that reaches the water. The land runs unbroken from the road to the lake and the frontage is the hotel's. On a shore of villas walled off from their own waterline, that continuity is the entry.

Density is part of the answer. Ten hectares carrying a hundred and fifty keys is a different proposition from ten hectares carrying twelve. The register records the ground and the load on it, not the ground alone.

Who it is not for

Villa d'Este is wrong for travellers who want to be few: this is a large hotel and the park works hard in August. It is wrong for anyone seeking modern rooms, since the interiors are period and deliberately kept so. It is wrong for guests who want seclusion from the town, because Cernobbio begins at the gate and the ferry lands ten minutes away. For a lake estate that holds ground rather than a house, the shelf's alpine and country entries serve better.
