Romazzino, A Belmond Hotel
One long beach shared with a public one, and several small coves that genuinely are the hotel's own.
Romazzino stands on a green outcrop above Spiaggia del Romazzino, a few kilometres from Porto Cervo, in gardens of myrtle and juniper that the hotel has grown for sixty years. Every published description calls the beach private. It is not quite that. The main stretch below the hotel runs into the public beach alongside it and is shared with it, while several smaller coves within the grounds are private in practice. That distinction is the whole of this entry. A house can preside over a shore without owning all of it, and the register's job is to say which part is which.
The Aga Khan IV opened the hotel in 1965 to a design by Michele Busiri Vici, one of the architects on his Costa Smeralda committee: whitewashed walls, curved forms, arched windows, a plan that steps down the outcrop. It is counted at about a hundred keys, published as seventy-eight rooms, sixteen suites and six villas, the villas set apart in the gardens with their own pools. Two pools serve the hotel, one saltwater and one fresh. Belmond took over management in 2024 after four decades in Marriott's Luxury Collection, the property itself remaining with Qatar's Smeralda Holding.
Presiding is not owning. The hotel sits above the bay and reads as its proprietor, and for the long beach that reading is wrong. The small coves are the part that answers this collection's question.
Gardens as the boundary. What separates Romazzino from the road and the neighbours is sixty years of planting on an outcrop. It is a soft edge, and it works, and it is not a wall.
Who it is not for
Romazzino is wrong for travellers who expect the whole beach to themselves: the main strand runs into a public one and fills in August. It is wrong for anyone with mobility difficulties, since the hotel steps down an outcrop and stairs connect almost everything. It is wrong for guests who want to arrive out of season, as this is a summer coast and the house closes. For a Costa Smeralda beach that is genuinely enclosed, Pitrizza is a few kilometres north.
